Rachel Nuwer 的文章 Languages: why we must save dying tongues? 全文2013词,前文列举了许多种面临灭绝的语言,花一半的篇幅讲述了现在世界上6500多门语言面临的濒危现象,从12-17段的这6个段落,单独取出来,可以看作一篇绝美的雅思论证文章:
Some people argue that language loss, like species loss, is simply a fact of life on an ever-evolving planet. But counter arguments are abundant.“A lot of people invoke social Darwinismto say ‘who cares’,” says Mark Turin, an anthropologist and linguist at Yale University. “But we spend huge amounts of money protecting species and biodiversity, so why should it be thatthe one thing that makes us singularly human shouldn’t be similarly nourished and protected?”
What’s more, languages are conduits of human is a relatively recent development in our history (written systems currently exist for only about one-third of the world’s languages), so language itself is often the only way to convey a community’s songs, stories and poems. The Iliad was an oral story before it was written, as was The Odyssey. “How many other traditions are out there in the world that we’ll never know about because no-one recorded them before the language disappeared?” Austin says.
Languages also convey unique cultures.Cherokee, for example, has no word for goodbye, only “I will see you again”. Likewise, no phrase exists for “I’m sorry”. On the other hand, it has special expressions all its own. One word – oo-kah-huh-sdee –represents the mouth-watering, cheek-pinching delight experienced when seeing an adorable baby or a kitten. “All of these things convey a culture, a way of interpreting human behaviour and emotion that’s not conveyed the same way as in the English language,” Belt says. Without the language, the culture itself might teeter, or even disappear. “If we are to survive, to continue on and to exist as a people with a distinct and unique culture,” he continues, “then we have to have a language.”
“It’s very hard as an English speaker to understand that,” adds Lenore Grenoble, a linguist at the University of Chicago. “But you just hear that time and time again: that people feel the loss of their language in a very personal way.”
Wealth of wisdom
Another argument mirrors that of biodiversity as ecosystems providea wealth of services for humanity – some known, others unacknowledged or yet to be discovered – languages, too, are ripe with possibility. They contain an accumulated body of knowledge, including about geography, zoology, mathematics, navigation, astronomy, pharmacology, botany, meteorology and more. In the case of Cherokee, that language was born of thousands of years spent inhabiting the southern Appalachia Mountains. Cherokee words exist for every last berry, stem, frond and toadstool in the region, and those names also convey what kind of properties that object might have – whether it’s edible, poisonous or has some medicinal value. “No culture has a monopoly on human genius, and we never know where the next brilliant idea may come from,” Harrison says. “We lose ancient knowledge if we lose languages.”
Finally, languages are ways of interpreting the world, and no two are the such, they can provide insight into neurology, psychology and the linguistic capacities of our species.“Different languages provide distinct pathways of thought and frameworks for thinking and solving problems,” Harrison says. Returning to Cherokee, unlike English it is verb rather than noun-based, and those verbs can be conjugated in a multitude of ways based on who they are acting upon. And depending on the suffix, speakers can indicate whether a noun is toward or away from them; uphill or downhill; or upstream or downstream. It’s a much more precise way of dealing with the world than English. “There’s a misconception that these languages are simple just because many are unwritten,” Turin says. “But most have incredibly complex grammatical systems that far exceed that of English.”

The popularization of TV makes it possible for children to watch TV programs both at home and school. This is an effective access to extra-curricular knowledge, but the problems caused by watching TV need to be addressed.
There is no doubt that children ca scope of knowledge by watching informative and educational programs. Being exposed to these programs, children would have a better understanding of nature, history and culture. In many schools, TV is adopted in class as a tool to aid teachers to impart knowledge of various subjects. Also, watching TV is a good way for children to refresh themselves and reduce the stress in their study. When they get tired pf reading books or doing math, they can take a break by watching interesting TV programs and return to the study with higher efficiency.
However, watching TV without appropriate supervision can be harmful to children's learning and growth. Due to the lack of self-control, some children may get addicted to TV series, wasting their precious time and distracting them from the study. When the amount of time spent in watching TV goes up, children would have less time to improve their social skills and do physical exercises. Another problem is that some programs may set a bad example and mislead children behavior, as children tend to be influenced by characters they see on television.
Overall, children can be allowed to watch TV at home and school and the important thing is that teachers and parents need to control the screen time and supervise children in selecting suitable programs.
2017雅思作文真题范文 第3篇
Children sitting in front of TV and enjoying their favorite programmes is certainly an attractive scenario, yet TV is an even more attractive tool for the education of children. Travel channels take children to many different places around the globe, thus opening their eyes to the vast outside world. History programmes give children a sense of the past by telling them about historical events and figures. And, if children watch such programms as “animal world”, they may cultivate an awareness of the environment in which we human beings find ourselves and then they may understand the importance of maintaining good relationships with animals. Furthermore, TV often presents knowledge in far more vivid ways than books and teachers, which makes learning from TV a very enjoyable and efficient process.
However, it does not follow that children should be encouraged to watch TV as much as they want at home and in school. In the first place, watching too much TV is harmful to the eyes of the children. As a matter of fact, many children become short-sighted at an early age simply because they spend too much time staring at the TV screen. Then, watching too much TV means the children have to sacrifice their time for reading and other creative activities. As many experts suggest, though children can learn a great deal from watching TV, yet their imagination and language skills can be better developed by reading. Even worse, if children sit in front of TV for too long, they will have little time to mix up with other children, which may put their interpersonal skills at stake.
To conclude, when we consider the positive role TV plays in children’s development, we need to take into account its possible consequences. We should allow children to watch TV because it is a good way for them to learn about the world, but we should also set a limit on the TV-watching time so that our children can find time for other activities that may help improve their personalities, imagination and interpersonal skills.
2017雅思作文真题范文 第4篇
When it comes to the issue about whether watching TV should be recommended for children, some people argue that parents should encourage their children to watch TV programs every day both at school and after school since they could acquire more knowledge. However, I cannot agree with this opinion.
To begin with, TV programs may distract children’s attention from study, which accounts for the reason why children should not spend too long time on TV programs. For most children, courses at school seem more boring while TV programs could be more interesting because there are funny plots, interesting characters and sound effects in TV programs. Then, children may be capable of focusing on their classes and cannot fully understand what teachers teach. In order prevent children from collapsing in front of a screen every day, children should be restricted for watching TV programs.
Furthermore, there may exist some inappropriate contents inside some programs exerting a negative influence on children. With the classification and rating administration in movies, children could avoid seeing many scenes concerning about drugs and violence. However, no one can fully guarantee that children can be absolutely away from those inappropriate programs on TV. Since children cannot distinguish right from wrong, they may imitate some bad behaviors, such as bullying others.
Admittedly, some opponents argue that watching TV enables children to broaden their horizons so they should see TV programs regularly; however, they are overoptimistic about this merit. It is true that some scientific and educational programs can help children acquire some knowledge in advance, but how much knowledge children can absorb remains a question. Unlike adults, children may find it too difficult to remember too much information at a time. For most children, it is enough for them to understand knowledge they learn at school and it may even become an extra burden on students if they are forced to watch more TV programs.
In sum, spending time on TV programs at school and at home may not be an optimal choice for children, considering that they may lose interests in study and simulate some bad behaviors.
2017雅思作文真题范文 第5篇
Children can learn effectively through watching TV. Therefore children should be encouraged to watch TV regularly both at home and at school.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?孩子可以有效的通过看电视来学习。所以无论在学校还是在家里,都应该鼓励孩子频繁地看电视。你同意与否?

我们看一篇分的平时习作:
According to expert statistics, in the world, one language disappears every two weeks. There are two types of reasons for the disappearance. One reason is that people speaking those endangered languages become fewer and fewer. Another reason is that people give up their mother tongues. Globalization has rendered English as the world's most common language, and has given a great impact on the application of minority languages. However, if there are few languages in the world, it may cause plenty of problems. I contend, quite bluntly, that we should protect the endangered languages from dying out, and preserve the variety of languages.
The disappearance of minority of languages leads to a decrease in the total number of world languages, which has a severe impact on the diversity of language. People may not have an intense feeling at first, but the language disappearance will cause noticeable effect when its number increases. It is similar to the decrease of animal diversity. When the amount of extinct animals increase, the biological chain will lose its balance, and the whole ecological system will be in chaos. The same consequence will appear if the languages keep dying out. The world will not only become dull, but also face the problem in language system.
Besides, along with the disappearance of language, the cultural legacy becomes more difficult, which leads to the culture of a nation or tribe face away. A famous example is about Maya culture. The aboriginal Maya people have left a massive amount of valuable knowledge and culture. However, a multitude of cultural heritage cannot be understood until now, because the traditional Maya language lost its speakers.
With the popularity of English, people attach less importance to heritage language. Some people even cast away their traditional language, and only teach the youngsters English. Therefore, endangered languages will soon lose their speakers, which also has a bad influence on their minority language. According to Sengupta, 196 endangered languages in India, and 192 languages in the US are dying out, and 190 languages in Brazil are on the brink of extinction. Heritage languages have suffered an impact and become extremely vulnerable in recent decades.
All in all, the extinction of any language is a great loss to both nation and the whole mankind. Language being the carrier of culture and communication tools, its diversification means that human heritage and diverse culture can be maintained.

2017雅思作文真题范文 第7篇
Many young people, once leaving school, have expressed their resentment (怨恨)toward learning, saying they will never get back to school. Then, what makes these young people hate their school life so vehemently(强烈地)?
There could be two reasons why this happens. First, today the students are surrounded by so many distractions(分心的事情)that they gradually find that learning is too boring and uninteresting. While students two decades ago had nearly no choice but sit in the classroom and read books, students today have easy and fastaccess(进入;使用)to Internet, on which they can do almost all things. For instance, they can play computer games, watch videos, search for any information they need, and chat with their friends, to mention just a few(如此等等). So, having been used to this kind of “easy” online life, many young people simply cannot put their heart into the more serious and consuming(耗费的)school work.
Another important factor that affects the students' attitude towards learning is that a good education seems not as important as before. For quite a long time, receiving a good education was the only way for young people to get a decent job and earn a high salary. But now, this is apparently(表面地;明显地)not the case any more. Influenced by business stars like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, many young people now begin to believe that one’s success is not in proportion to(与......成正比)the education s/he receives. The students, therefore, are not motivated enough to focus on their learning.
As education of the young is so important to the future of the world, we ought to find ways out of this embarrassing situation. For example, the school and parents should work together to set limits on the time children spend online and encourage them to devote more time to learning. Besides, young people should be made to understand that life is not just about making money, but about having rich and colorful experience and learning is the best gateway(通路)to that rewarding(有回报的)life.

In the current era, there is a phenomenon that the current generation does not hold a positive view of study when they leave school. This essay will examine the possible reasons and potential solutions for this phenomenon.
To begin with, students do not know how to use what they learn, which makes them dislike study. Currently, some students are satisfied with what they have learned from the class, but actually there exists a huge gap between what one learns and what one can do. For example, if a mechanic just learns everything from a manual theoretically, it does not necessarily mean that s/he could successfully fix a car immediately. Thus, lacking of internship and working experience, students may find that lessons given by teachers cannot be directly used in work and it is natural for them to neglect study on purpose.
In addition, study is not the only factor for success. Some students regard academic performances as a guarantee for job seeking, but they may neglect other crucial factors. For example, communicative skills are emphasized in almost every enterprise currently. If a person does not know how to cooperate and coordinate with peers, even if s/he has a good academic performance, s/he may not be accepted by enterprises. Thus, it is the ignorance of social skills that make some candidates fail to secure employment, but they may attribute their failure to learning.
In order to spark young people’s interest in studying and alter their negative attitude towards study, universities and colleges should provide them with more internship opportunities before graduation, through which they could link what they learn on class with practice. Then, after graduation, they could secure employment in a shorter time with their working experience. Meanwhile, when they do internships, it is an excellent opportunity for them to learn how to communicate with their workmates, improving their ability to cooperate and coordinate.
In sum, lacking working experience and social skills may account for the reason why young people do not want to learn when they leave school and universities and colleges should take this responsibility and provide more internship positions to them.

The past decades have witnessed the technology boom and thus our lifestyle has been revolutionized. Despite all the benefits, technology complicates our life in many aspects. As a result, ceasing to use technology is believed to be the way to solve this problem. I,on the other hand, disagree with this statement.
There is no denying the fact that technology may have led to complexity in day-to-day life for both the elderly and the young. The former,as the major groups requiring immediate medical treatment, find making appointments on line quite challenging. This leaves them less chances to see doctors and more inconvenience compared with old days when all the patients are waiting outside the doctors' office with on one jumping the queue out of thin air. The latter also suffer from the side effect brought by technology because they have to constantly receive training and drilling to barely keep up with the frequent update of technology, like the widely-used CRM in the office.
In spite of the inconvenience and complexity, it is inadvisable to simplify our life through abandoning technology. Actually, the cure lies in the technology itself. With user-friendly instruction on the website, such as videos or radios, the aged can be spared from the troubles. As for the young people,it is highly likely that the technology may develop perfectly enough and need no more updates. Additionally, the usage of technology,if once stopped, would definitely bring more complex situation. For example, people have to spend months traveling across the Atlantic Ocean, which can be accomplished with airplanes in a matter of hours.
In conclusion,it is not sensible to get rid of technology for the complexity it brings. Instead,we should carry on developing to settle this problem.

2017雅思作文真题范文 第11篇
Over the past century, science and technology has been developing unprecedentedly and changing every aspect of people's lives. In my point of view, technology brings about higher efficiency and greater convenience, even though it causes confusion and disorder under some circumstances.
The benefits of modern technologies are multiple. Automation is widely used on the assembly line, setting free millions of people from the arduous and repetitive to the widespread use of the Internet, people have easier access to information than ever before. Instead of going to the library to consult reference books, they can acquire any information they want via the Internet. Moreover, emails and mobile phones enable people to stay in touch more conveniently and efficiently, compared with the old days when they had to go to the post office or visit others in person.
Despite the above-mentioned benefits,we cannot deny the fact that technology may lead to complexity and inconvenience in some cases. For instance, some old people find it difficult to use public facilities equipped with electronic-devices. However, this issue can be addressed with clear instructions provided. Another example is cyber fraud, which is difficult to prevent as the false information can spread very fast on the who get deceived may complain that the virtual space generates more crimes.
Overall, there is no denying that some problems and troubles may occur When various new technologies are applied to people's lives. However, returning to a simple life without technology is not a solution and I believe a better future of mankind lies with the further progress of science and technology.
2017雅思作文真题范文 第12篇
When it comes to the issue about the impact of technology, some people argue that it is better to promote simple life styles without technology, but I approve of the idea that our life becomes more convenient thanks to technology.
To begin with, the way of communication is simpler due to technological improvements. In the past, it was inconvenient for individuals to contact others if they were far from each other and letter writing might be the only method of long distance communication. However, telecommunications in the current era allow people to communicate with anyone through telephones or internet. Thus, technologies actually facilitate communications, connecting people to each other.
In addition, technology reduces labor intensity greatly. Decades ago, it was common that workers needed to do a lot of labor-intensive work repeatedly and housewives needed to spend several hours on domestic affairs. In contrast, automatic assembly line serves to liberate workers from such hard work and modern appliances could shorten the time of doing housework every day. As a result, modern life becomes simpler since individuals can avoid meaningless work and spare more time on other parts of life.
Admittedly, some opponents may believe that their work has become more complex due to modern technology because they need to adopt some new systems, such as those Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, which waste extra time and are not friendly to users, especially old users. However, they are neglecting the potential benefits and convenience brought by modern technology. The fact is that enterprises could better manage their resources with the use of ERP systems, which contributes to regulating enterprises more scientifically. Besides, enterprises will also provide their employees with guideline for new systems, and many employees refuse to use new systems just because they are too lazy to change themselves, which cannot be a reasonable excuse for denying technologies.
To sum up, life is not complex with technology and human beings should embrace technology, considering that technology offers humans convenient ways of communication and reduces labor intensity.
2017雅思作文真题范文 第13篇
Many young people are having a negative attitude to learning and this is true especially after their graduation. This essay will analyze some possible reasons for this and suggest potential ways to reverse the case.
The major reason is that students and sometimes even parents and teachers have a distorted recognition Of education. Many Of them believe that the purpose Of receiving education is simply to guarantee a future career and gaining a better chance of employment is the single goal that motivates them. But today even after having graduated from school, young people are not ensured Of a suitable job. They have witnessed examples of their seniors who are still struggling to find jobs and those who have found jobs are being underpaid and exploited.
Another important reason should be due to the fact that courses of study are often forced upon students and (their aptitudes and interests are barely taken into consideration. For example, a student who wants to make his or her career in the field of literature is forced to study be positive about his or evaluate the learning process, which should easily discourage the interests in learning. Unfortunately, test-wise students can often perform well on exams without having good underlying knowledge or skills. It is easy to notice that many teachers and learners focus only on those aspects of the curriculum to be tested; thus narrowing the educational experience for all.
However, there are several steps and actions that can be taken to bring back the attitude of young people. First and foremost, the whole education experience of students should be less examination-oriented and instead Of preparing them for the future tests, there should be a wide range of subjects to develop their interests and other skills. Also, students should be encouraged to become more involved in making their choices and plans in study, which would promote their motivation in a desirable way. Additionally, teachers and parents who need counseling in teaching and bringing up children should be supported by related authorities and organizations, such as offering them seminars provided by experienced professionals.
